A Travel Insider’s Guide to Fraser Island
It’s time to say hello to the world’s largest sand island on your Wild Kiwi Australia tour. Let’s go!
Fraser Island 101
Fraser Island is UNESCO heritage-listed and situated on Queensland’s south-eastern coast, around 160 miles or 250 kilometres north of Brisbane. Formed on a layer of volcanic bedrock over a period of 750,000 years, Fraser Island is now home to mangrove forests, sand dunes, peat swamps, coastal heaths, eucalyptus woodland, and rainforests.
A spectacular array of amphibians, reptiles and birds, alongside a small number of mammals, call the diverse terrain of this 1,840-square kilometre island home, which makes this island paradise a must-visit for every nature lover.
Admire Incredible Flora and Fauna
From wallabies, possums, bandicoots and sugar gliders, to geckos, dolphins, peregrine falcons, sea eagles, and perhaps even a saltwater crocodile or two, it’s safe to say there’s a lot of wildlife to look out for.
Enjoy some of the more than 100 freshwater lakes, look out for a variety of trees with delightful names including scribbly gums and piccabean palms, and admire the glorious colours and liveliness of this amazing landscape.
Explore Fraser Island’s Hidden Treasures
Accompanied by resident dingoes, blow the morning cobwebs away with a sunrise walk along the shoreline, and get up close and personal to some of the island’s hidden treasures. From ancient shipwrecks to the unforgettably vivid blue hue of Lake McKenzie, everywhere you look will take your breath away. In fact, you’ll have more than a few ‘Pinch me, is this real?’ moments.
Follow the Eco-Code on your Wild Kiwi Australia Tour
We’ll give you the lowdown on dingo safety and the island’s eco code before and during our time here, but we’re eager to ensure we all do our bit to ensure the island and its inhabitants are protected and respected.
Words alone simply cannot do this glorious island justice. So, instead of watching us waffle about how in love with Fraser Island we are, come and join us and listen to us sing its praises in person. Because, well, why not?
