By Wild Kiwi Team published on 30 December 2017

Oh boy, are you in for a treat! Although we reckon every element of New Zealand holidays are perfectly extraordinary, the Waitomo region is extra unforgettable. Here are 5 reasons why.

1) The Star Of The Show: The Waitomo Glowworm Caves

As the jewel in Waitomo’s crown we probably should have left this point for last, but we couldn’t wait! If you haven’t heard of the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, please take a second to marvel at a few pictures to give you a taste of this intensely enchanting experience. These caves are like something from a Harry Potter movie only, well, even MORE magical. Lumos!

2) Explore The Ruakuri Bush Walk On Your New Zealand Holidays

On this 45-minute walk, you’ll have the chance to admire some of the region’s natural limestone cliffs, natural tunnels and arches. Walking the route during daylight is lovely, but you can also choose to go after dark where you’ll get to see more glowworms putting on another stunning light display.

3) Te Kuiti

Known as the “Shearing Capital of the World”, this undeniably charming town boasts a giant shearing statue, which depicts exactly what you would expect. Delightfully unusual and incredibly impressive, we won’t blame you if you want to snap a few selfies with this 7-tonne structure!

4) Kawhia Hot Springs

Coromandel’s Hot Water Beach is probably one of New Zealand’s most famous stretches of coastline, however you can also dig yourself your own hot pool on Ocean Beach. Time your visit to coincide either two hours before or after low tide, sit back, and just relax!

5) Want To See A Waterfall?

Yeah, you do! You’ll find a viewing platform a 10-minute walk from Te Anga roadside, where you can admire the untamed beauty of the Marokopa Falls. Often lauded as one of the world’s most beautiful waterfalls, you definitely won’t regret spending some time here. Additionally, if you’re a fan of The Hobbit, the Waitomo region is also home to the Waitanguru Falls, which might look just a little bit familiar.
