Lake Taupo, Australasia’s Largest Lake, Is Seriously Stunning

Situated in the southern Waikato Region, Taupo is a lively town on the shore of the majestic Lake Taupo. Believe it or not its actually a giant volcano with a very fiery past. In fact, its last eruption in 181 AD was powerful enough to alter the skies as far away as Europe. Lake Taupo has some seriously impressive views best enjoyed with a well-deserved beer watching the sunset.

Immerse Yourself In Maori Culture In Taupo

Make the most of your time in this spectacular region by embarking on an intimate cultural tour. From guided wilderness walks to hangi (traditional Māori food cooked in the ground) and kappa haka (a traditional dance and song experience). As well as being home to a series of famous walking and bike trails across impressive geothermal terrain, taking to the water in the Taupo region is also recommended.

The Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings is hailed as one of the most extraordinary artworks in New Zealand. Matahi Brightwell and his team of four artists created this outstanding carving of his ancestor Ngatoroirangiand. Sculpted over a period of four years in the late 1970s, they stand at 14m tall. They are remarkable and it’s not difficult to see why.
