Wanaka: same scenery, quieter energy

Wanaka sits on its own glacial lake about an hour north and trades a bit of the buzz for a lot more breathing room. It's smaller, more residential, and has a laid-back, lake-town feel that a lot of travellers find is the better fit after a few big cities and long bus rides. You'll still find serious adventure here, Wanaka is the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park and home to the Cardrona and Treble Cone ski areas, but the vibe leans toward cafes, lake swims and golden-hour photos over queuing for the next big-ticket activity.

According to the Department of Conservation, it's a 5 to 6 hour return trip with around 1,200 metres of elevation gain, and the famous lookout that fills your Instagram feed sits about 30 minutes before the actual summit, so you don't need to push all the way to the top to get the shot. It's a proper leg-burner, so budget the full day and start early.

Queenstown has excellent day walks too, particularly around Ben Lomond and the Queenstown Hill loop, but if hiking is the main reason you're heading south, Wanaka is where you'll want to base yourself for at least a night.

Which one wins for nightlife and food?

This one's Queenstown's, no contest. It has a far bigger spread of bars, restaurants and late-night options, plus that classic backpacker-meets-luxury energy where you can easily find yourself making plans with people you met an hour ago. Wanaka has a genuinely good food scene for its size, think excellent coffee, craft beer and lake-view dining, but it winds down earlier and suits travellers who'd rather have an early dinner and an early start than a big night out.

Is Wanaka cheaper than Queenstown?

Generally, yes. Accommodation, food and activities in Wanaka tend to run a little cheaper than Queenstown, mostly because Queenstown carries a heavier tourist premium, especially in peak summer and ski season. It's not a huge gap, but if you're watching your budget, Wanaka stretches it slightly further.

How many days do you need in each town?

Two to three nights in Queenstown gives you time for the big activities and a night out without feeling rushed. One to two nights in Wanaka is usually enough unless you're tackling Roy's Peak, in which case build in a full day for the hike alone.

Can you see Milford Sound from Wanaka?

It's possible but it's a long day, Milford Sound day trips from Wanaka typically run 12 to 13 hours round trip. Queenstown is the much shorter, more common departure point, so if Milford Sound is a priority, factor that into where you base yourself.

Is the Crown Range Road safe to drive yourself?
